the vine

Jesus is the Vine, and we are the branches, fully dependent on Him for nourishment, strength, and life. When we abide in Him, we find joy, peace, and the ability to bear fruit for His glory. Without Him, we can do nothing, but through Him, we thrive and flourish.

I Am the True Vine (John 15:1-17 ESV)

1 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not abide in me, he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. 7 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. 9 As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. 10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. 11 These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. 12 “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15 No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. 17 These things I command you, so that you will love one another.

Staying Connected: What Jesus Really Meant When He Said "I Am the Vine"

Jesus is talking to his disciples, and he says: “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser.” (John 15:1, ESV)

It’s such a simple image, but the more you sit with it, the deeper it gets. So what does Jesus want us to see here? Why this metaphor of the vine? And what’s it supposed to mean for the way we live right now?

1. The Vine and the Branches: Staying Connected

The heart of this section is all about connection. Jesus says, “Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.” (John 15:4)

He’s not talking about a casual, Sunday-morning kind of faith. He’s talking about something organic. Living. A branch isn’t just “near” the vine. Its whole existence depends on staying attached, drawing life, nutrients, everything.

Paul picks up the same idea in Galatians: “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.” (Galatians 2:20) The Christian life isn’t about trying harder; it’s about staying connected.

2. Bearing Fruit: The Evidence of Real Faith

Jesus doesn’t leave it at “just abide.” He spells out what happens if we do: “Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5)

Fruit is a big deal in the Bible. It’s shorthand for what your life produces when God’s at work in you: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, and all the rest (Galatians 5:22-23). If the connection is real, the evidence will show up. Not overnight, maybe, but over time.

James, always practical, puts it this way: “Faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.” (James 2:17) The fruit doesn’t save us. But it does show that we’re alive.

3. The Pruning Process: Growth Through Challenge

There’s a tougher part to this metaphor. Jesus says, “Every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit.” (John 15:2)

Nobody likes pruning. It’s uncomfortable. Sometimes it feels like God is taking away things we thought we needed. But pruning isn’t punishment; it’s preparation for more growth. The writer of Hebrews echoes this: “For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness…” (Hebrews 12:11)

4. The Command to Love: What the Fruit Looks Like

After all this talk about vines and branches, Jesus brings it home: “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” (John 15:12)

This isn’t vague, feel-good love. It’s costly, sacrificial, real. “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13) The ultimate fruit of abiding in Jesus is a life that actually looks like his—laying down our rights, our comfort, even our lives for others.

Paul says it bluntly in Romans: “Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.” (Romans 13:8)

5. Friendship With Jesus: A New Kind of Relationship

Maybe the most surprising thing Jesus says is this: “No longer do I call you servants… but I have called you friends.” (John 15:15)

We’re not just workers in God’s vineyard, ticking tasks off a list. We’re invited into a real relationship, friendship with the Son of God. That’s the kind of connection Jesus is after.

So What Do We Do With This?

If you’re feeling dry, disconnected, or just plain tired, maybe the answer isn’t to try harder. Maybe it’s to come back to the vine. Spend time with Jesus. Let his words sink in. Ask God to show you where you need pruning, where you need to grow, and what fruit he wants to bring out of your life.

Because, as Jesus says, apart from him, we can do nothing. But with him? There’s no telling how much fruit he can produce.

Supporting Scriptures:

If you haven’t sat with John 15 in a while, maybe today’s the day to read it slowly. Let those words sink in. He is the vine; we are the branches. Everything else flows from there.
