Lets explore the profound statement that we find throughout scripture, “I AM.” These two simple words carry a weight of meaning and power. They echo through the ages, from the burning bush where God revealed His name to Moses, “I AM who I AM” (Exodus 3:14), to Jesus’ declarations in the New Testament where He identifies Himself with life-giving truths.
As we dive into this topic, let’s open our hearts and minds to the implications of this profound identity.
How do we, as followers of Christ, relate to the “I AM”?
How does this shape our understanding of who we are and who we are called to be?
The God Who IS
Let’s start with the Old Testament. In Exodus 3:13-15, when Moses encounters God at the burning bush, he asks God for His name. God responds with, “I AM who I AM.” This name signifies existence in its purest form, emphasizing God's eternal nature, self-sufficiency, and unchanging character.
When we say, “I AM,” we recognize that God exists outside of time and circumstance. His nature is not defined by our limitations. In Isaiah 43:10-13(ESV)
10 “You are my witnesses,” declares the Lord, and my servant whom I have chosen,
that you may know and believe me and understand that I am he. Before me no god was formed, nor shall there be any after me.11 I, I am the Lord, and besides me there is no savior.12 I declared and saved and proclaimed, when there was no strange god among you; and you are my witnesses,” declares the Lord, “and I am God.13 Also henceforth I am he; there is none who can deliver from my hand; I work, and who can turn it back?”
Reflection
Pause for a moment and reflect on this: God is not merely a title; He is the essence of existence. When we say, “I AM,” we align ourselves with the truth that God is always present and available. Our “I AM” moments must be reflective of our trust in Him.
Jesus: The I AM Statements
Transitioning into the New Testament, we encounter the “I AM” statements made by Jesus, which reveal His identity and purpose. In the book of John alone, He says:
"I am the bread of life" (John 6:35)
"I am the light of the world" (John 8:12)
"I am the door" (John 10:9)
"I am the good shepherd" (John 10:11)
"I am the resurrection and the life" (John 11:25)
"I am the way, the truth, and the life" (John 14:6)
"I am the vine" (John 15:5)
These declarations are not just metaphors; they are invitations. Each “I AM” statement invites us to experience Him in profound ways. When Jesus says, “I am the bread of life,” He invites us to find spiritual sustenance in Him. When He says, “I am the light of the world,” He calls us to reflect His light in a world often shrouded in darkness.
Application
As we explore these “I AM” statements, ask yourself:
How do you experience Christ in these roles?
Are you finding nourishment in Him?
Are you reflecting His light to those around you?
Let’s look at John 15:5 (ESV) where Jesus says, “I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” This statement challenges us to consider our connection to Him. Just as branches draw life from the vine, we must remain rooted in Christ to bear the fruit He has called us to produce.
Our Identity: I AM a Child of God
Now, let’s turn our attention to our identity. As we embrace the “I AM,” we must also recognize who we are in Christ. John 1:12 (ESV) tells us, “But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,”
This is a profound truth: WE are the children of God! Our identity is not based on our accomplishments, failures, or the opinions of others. Our identity is anchored in our relationship with Him.
Encouragement
Sometimes, the world tries to define us by our circumstances, our past, or our mistakes. But remember, our worth and identity are rooted in the love and grace of our Heavenly Father. When you feel inadequate or unworthy, speak this truth over yourself: “I AM a child of God.”
In Romans 8:16-17 (ESV), we read, “16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.”
We are heirs to a heavenly kingdom, called to live out our identity as children of the Most High.
Call to Action
So, what do we do with this revelation? Here are a few actionable steps you can take to embrace your identity and to live in the truth of “I AM”:
1. Daily Declaration: Start each day by declaring who you are in Christ. Say out loud, “I AM a beloved child of God,” “I AM forgiven,” “I AM empowered by the Holy Spirit.”
2. Stay Connected: Make it a priority to remain connected to Jesus, the vine. Spend time in prayer, meditation, and scripture reading. Allow His words to fill you and transform you.
3. Reflect His Light: In your daily interactions, look for opportunities to reflect the light of Christ. Show love, kindness, and compassion.
4. Engage in Community: Join a small group or community where you can share your journey of faith. Encourage one another in your identities as children of God.
5. Serve Others: Find ways to serve in your church or community. When we serve, we live out our identity as Christ’s hands and feet.
Conclusion
As we embrace the “I AM,” we discover who we are in Christ. We are not defined by our past, our struggles, or the world’s expectations. We are defined by His love, grace, and calling.
Let us go forth today with renewed hope and purpose, knowing that we can confidently say, “I AM…” because of who He is.
