Settle
Dim the room, get comfortable, and take one slow breath together.
A gentle five-minute reading and prayer for younger children: when bedtime feels scary, we can trust the God who stays near and never sleeps.
Your five-minute bedtime plan
Read slowly, keep voices soft, and let your child stay tucked in while you share.
Dim the room, get comfortable, and take one slow breath together.
Read Psalm 56:3 slowly, then repeat it together.
Remind your child that God stays close when the room feels dark.
Let your child name one bedtime worry without rushing the answer.
Place the worry in God’s hands and end with a peaceful blessing.
Read together
“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.”
Scripture quotation from the English Standard Version.
One big idea
Nighttime can make small worries feel very big. A dark corner, an unfamiliar sound, a bad dream, or tomorrow’s plans may make a child feel afraid. Psalm 56:3 gives us a simple truth to remember: fear can become a moment to turn toward God.
Trust does not mean pretending that nothing feels scary. It means remembering that God is stronger than what frightens us. He hears every whispered prayer, stays with us through the night, and gives peace one moment at a time. We can rest because our loving God is awake, present, and faithful.
Whisper and wonder
Choose one or two. Keep the conversation brief, warm, and reassuring.
Is there anything that feels scary or worries you tonight?
What does Psalm 56:3 tell us we can do when we feel afraid?
What is one true thing about God that can help your heart feel calm?
Would you like me to stay for one more minute while we pray and breathe slowly?
Tonight’s calming practice
Place a hand over your heart and say together: “When I am afraid, I can trust God. He is here with me.”
Take a slow breath and think: “God is with me.”
Slowly let the breath go and think: “I can trust Him.”
Repeat three times, then let your body become still and quiet.
Pray together
Dear God, thank You for staying close to me tonight. You know every sound, every shadow, and every worry in my heart. When I feel afraid, help me remember that I can trust You. Please give me peaceful thoughts, quiet rest, and courage for tomorrow. Watch over our home and everyone I love. Thank You that You never sleep and never leave me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
