Praying through Scripture simply means using the Bible as the words and fuel of your prayer. Instead of searching for what to say, you let God’s own Word shape your conversation with Him — turning His promises, commands, and truths into personal prayer.
It’s one of the oldest and most steadying ways to pray. It keeps prayer honest, anchored in truth, and aligned with God’s heart rather than only our feelings.
Four steps: read, reflect, respond, rest
Read
Choose a short passage — a psalm, a promise, a command, or a few verses about God’s character. Read it slowly, more than once. You’re not covering ground; you’re listening.
Try Psalm 23, Philippians 4:4–9, or Lamentations 3:22–24.
Reflect
Ask what the passage reveals about God, and what it stirs in you. Notice the word or phrase that stands out — that’s often where God is meeting you.
“What are You showing me here, Lord? What does this say about who You are?”
Respond
Turn the verse into a prayer. Praise God for what it reveals, confess where you fall short of it, thank Him for His promise, or ask Him to make it true in your life.
Turn “The Lord is my shepherd” into “Lord, be my shepherd today — lead me, I’m following.”
Rest
End in stillness. Carry the verse with you through the day. Let it return to your mind on the commute, in the waiting room, in the quiet before sleep.
Sit quietly for a moment and simply be with the God whose Word you’ve prayed.
Turning verses into prayers
See how a psalm, a promise, and a command each become a personal prayer.
Praying a psalm · Psalm 23
Lord, be my shepherd today — I lack nothing when You lead. Where I’m worn, give me green pastures and still waters. Restore my soul. When I walk through dark valleys, remind me You are with me, and let Your presence be the comfort that steadies my steps. Amen.
Turn a psalm into a first-person prayerPraying a promise · Isaiah 41:10
Father, You tell me not to fear, because You are with me — not to be dismayed, because You are my God. So I hold You to it. Strengthen me. Help me. Uphold me with Your righteous right hand when I feel like I’m slipping. I trust Your promise more than my fear. Amen.
Pray God’s promises back to HimPraying a command · Colossians 3:12–13
God, You call me to clothe myself with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience — and to forgive as I’ve been forgiven. On my own I can’t. So form these things in me by Your Spirit. Make me more like Jesus in the way I treat the people around me today. Amen.
