Let’s explore two simple words we find running all through Scripture: “I AM.” They carry a weight of meaning and power — echoing from the burning bush, where God revealed His name to Moses, to Jesus’ declarations in the Gospels where He identifies Himself with life-giving truth.
God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel: I AM has sent me to you.”
The God Who Is
When Moses meets God at the burning bush and asks for His name, God answers, “I AM WHO I AM.” The name signifies existence in its purest form — God’s eternal nature, His self-sufficiency, His unchanging character. His being is not defined by our limitations. When we say “I AM,” we align ourselves with the truth that God is always present and always available.
“You are my witnesses,” declares the Lord, “and my servant whom I have chosen, that you may know and believe me and understand that I am he. Before me no god was formed, nor shall there be any after me. I, I am the Lord, and besides me there is no savior.”
God is not merely a title; He is the essence of existence itself. Our own “I AM” moments should reflect our trust in Him.
Jesus: The I AM Statements
In the New Testament we meet the “I AM” statements of Jesus, which reveal His identity and purpose. In the Gospel of John alone He declares:
- “I am the bread of life.”John 6:35 · ESV
- “I am the light of the world.”John 8:12 · ESV
- “I am the door.”John 10:9 · ESV
- “I am the good shepherd.”John 10:11 · ESV
- “I am the resurrection and the life.”John 11:25 · ESV
- “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.”John 14:6 · ESV
- “I am the vine.”John 15:5 · ESV
These aren’t only metaphors — they’re invitations. Each “I AM” invites us to experience Him: to find sustenance in the bread of life, to walk by the light of the world, to reflect that light into the dark places around us.
I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
Just as branches draw their life from the vine, we have to stay rooted in Christ to bear the fruit He has called us to produce.
Our Identity: I AM a Child of God
As we embrace the “I AM,” we also have to recognize who we are in Christ. Our identity isn’t built on our accomplishments, our failures, or the opinions of others — it is anchored in our relationship with Him.
But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.
When the world tries to define you by your circumstances or your past, speak this truth over yourself: I AM a child of God. And more than that — an heir.
The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ.
Living in the truth of “I AM”
So what do we do with this? A few practical steps to embrace your identity in Christ:
- Daily declaration. Start each day naming who you are in Christ: “I AM a beloved child of God. I AM forgiven. I AM empowered by the Holy Spirit.”
- Stay connected. Remain in the vine — time in prayer, meditation, and Scripture — and let His words fill and reshape you.
- Reflect His light. In ordinary interactions, look for the chance to show His love, kindness, and compassion.
- Engage in community. Join a small group where you can share the journey and encourage one another as children of God.
- Serve others. Find a way to serve in your church or neighborhood — it’s how we live out our identity as Christ’s hands and feet.
As we embrace the “I AM,” we discover who we are. We are not defined by our past, our struggles, or the world’s expectations. We are defined by His love, His grace, and His calling.
Go forward today knowing you can confidently say “I AM…” — because of who He is.
