Grief is not a lack of faith. The Bible is full of tears, and Jesus himself wept at a friend's grave. These verses don't hurry you through sorrow. They keep you company in it, and point to the God who is close to the brokenhearted.
God is near in sorrow
- The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.Psalm 34:18
- He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.Psalm 147:3
- Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.Matthew 5:4
When you have no words
- Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.Psalm 23:4
- Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.Psalm 30:5
- Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee.Psalm 55:22
Hope beyond the grave
- I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live.John 11:25
- But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.1 Thessalonians 4:13
- And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying.Revelation 21:4
Pray this
Lord, you see this grief and you don't turn away from it. Be near me in the valley. Hold what I've lost, and hold me. When I have no words, let your Spirit carry me. Thank you that death does not get the last word. Amen.
